Contempt Hearing Friday

So today there were 73 cases in the one courtroom. They all dealt with  contempt at some level.

There were about 20 no shows, and a lot of continuances. It’s really frustrating to watch those that are required morally and legally to pay for their child support have an extra 3 months to wiggle around and play games. Out of the people that did show up, only a few were unemployed.

There was once again, one female out of 73 non-paying, non-custodial parents.

There was one person who was $36,000 in arrears who was sent to jail for 30 days. He was very concerned about his current family, the judge reminded him about his daughter.

The judge got very stern with another gentleman and reminded him that in California - Child Support is the First Rule. That means that Child Support comes first, before rent, before mortgage, before groceries, before electric bills, before anything for yourself, Child Support comes first. (I think this is the guy that almost went to jail, but the judge gave him one more chance - he also explained that he was on unemployment, and working for cash under the table!)

Ted pled guilty to 8 charges of contempt of court, and 8 charges were waived. It’s suspended with a three year probation - monthly child support obligations + arrears must be met or there is the 40 days in jail.

So we’ll see, the quest continues

  1. This at least makes me feel like I am not in this alone .. But the outstanidng arrears in m case is 50, 000 and counting with a very same situation .
I am employed . by the state, have to take basically a day off work to sit there while the other parent no shows ands I am still waiting to actually talk to the DA rep. Carless, college support less for my daughter … so what is actually being done about cases like this , and what actually does CONTEMPT do for collecting.
